This old academic center included the fields of mathematics, physics and astronomy, which was established by the efforts of Khwaja-Nasiruddin Tosi, a famous Iranian scientist. Maragheh Observatory had a library with more than 400,000 books and scientists from different parts of the world gathered in it. This center has valuable publications such as "Dhaij Ilkhani", "Tahrir Euclid", "Sharh al-Asharat", "Usaf al-Ishraq", "Astralab", "Qa'ed fi Tab", "Sadr al-Aqwab" and... .. is the ornament of prestigious libraries in the world, including Iran, Paris, London, America, Western Europe, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tashkent, Dushanbe and Petersburg.

The Maragheh observatory is not only the most complete observatory that has been created so far, but it is also the first equipped observatory before the discovery of the camera. So that an observatory with its equipment was not created in the west until three hundred years later.

Raba Rashidi of Tabriz

The real background of the establishment of the university in Tabriz dates back to more than 700 years ago, that is, to the 8th century of Hijri or the 13th century AD (symmetrical to the Middle Ages in the West). The large scientific, educational, endowment and university complex of Raba-Rashidi was built by Khwaja Rashiduddin Fazlullah Hamdani, the scientific and resourceful minister of Ghazan Khan, in Tabriz, the capital of the great empire of Iran at that time. Khwaja Rashid al-Din has written the rules and regulations of Ruba Rashid's collection in an exquisite book called "Al-Waqf Al-Rashidiyya Bekht Al-Waqf Fi Bayan Amor Al-Waqf and Spending". Fortunately, the original and handwritten version of the Waqf Name has been preserved and is an ornament of the Central Library of Tabriz. Rabe Rashidi's endowment or the charter of the University of Tabriz 700 years ago in 1386 was among the first written works of Iran and was registered in the UNESCO World Memory. Due to the fact that Khwaja Rashiduddin Fazlullah was a doctor and the great interest of Ghazan Khan and other Ilkhans in the field of medicine, "Dar al-Shifa" or Raba-Rashidi Hospital and Medical College of Tabriz was of special importance. The head of "Dar al-Shifa" or the oldest medical school Tabriz was "Mohammed Bin Nili" who was known as "Jalenus Zaman". In addition to treating patients, each doctor taught five to ten students. The duration of studying at the medical school was five years. After the mentioned period, if they were able to treat patients, they would receive "permission" or, in today's terms, "diploma". Students were taught theoretically in the mornings and practically in the afternoons. Medical students, like other students, were in Raba-Rashidi day and night and all their needs were well provided. They received "soap price" (cleaning money), "halwa price" (food money) and "jame price" (clothing money). Surgery, Kahali (eye medicine), Mujiri (fracture) were among the common specialties in Daral al-Shafa, and many foreign doctors from Egypt, Syria, China, India, etc. had gathered in Dar al-Shafa.
Like other high schools of Raba Rashidi, many students from different Islamic countries were studying in Dar al-Shafa and the university had a completely international aspect. There were various scientific books in various languages and it was considered one of the largest libraries of that era. This noble university has many publications. The translation of the medical book "Tanksuq-nameh" from the Khata language to Farsi by Khawaja Rashiduddin and his colleagues can be mentioned as an example of Raba-Rashidi's medical publications. Fortunately, the book "Tanksuq-nameh" has been preserved and is kept in one of the prestigious museums of Turkey. This university was open for 20 years and after that it was closed and destroyed due to various historical reasons. Considering the importance And the unique features of this educational and endowment scientific center, valuable efforts have been made in the direction of "Rashidi quarter revival".
Tabriz Art Gallery
"Dar al-Funun Tabriz" is the first new higher education school in Azerbaijan, which was opened in Tabriz in 1293 AH during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. Dar al-Funun Tabriz is the second new higher education center in Iran that was established after "Dar al-Funun Tehran". Dar al-Funun in Tehran is one of the precious steps taken by Mirzataghi Khan Amirkabir in line with his modernization plans during his prime ministership. Sending students to Europe started from the time of Abbas Mirza. Amir Kabir, who was in Tabriz with these Farang educated people, saw it as a good idea to refrain from sending students to Europe and establish a school with the same Farang style and program with Farang teachers in Iran.
Dar al-Funun of Tabriz accepted 50-70 students every year and some of them studied for free and day and night. This high school has made a valuable contribution to the education of a generation of intellectuals of Azerbaijan, so that the graduates of this school have been selected for important jobs in the military and country offices. Dar al-Funun of Tabriz or Mozafari school during its 20 years of life trained medical doctors, so the most famous doctors of Tabriz city a hundred years ago were the doctors who graduated from this school.
Military techniques and medicine were taught in this school. Therefore, both military officers and doctors graduated from this school. The students who were admitted to this school must have basic and basic information and have finished special schools.
Dar al-Funun teachers taught these courses:
Medicine, Geography, Mathematics, Infantry, Artillery, Calligraphy, French, English, Arabic, Farsi and Quran reading.
On the 15th of Rabi al-Thani 1311 AH, Tabriz Dar al-Funun published a magazine (monthly) called "Verqa" which is considered the organ of this high school. This magazine is managed by Iraj Mirza, a famous poet of Tabrizi who was the vice-chancellor of the school, was published. Varaqeh can be called the first academic journal of Tabriz.
Dar al-Funun of Tabriz has been reopened since 1311 AH (after a short period of closure) and it has been renamed to "Mubarake Mozaffarih School" by the order of "Amir Nizam Grossi", the pioneer of Azerbaijan.
During these days, when Mirza Mohammad Nadim Bashi was the head of this high school, a booklet containing the regulations and program of Dar al-Funun lessons was published. "Mozafaria School" or "Dar al-Funun Tabriz" has continued its fruitful scientific and educational life until 1314, and it is a pity that this center has not lived for more than 20 years like the large complex of Ruba-Rashidi.
Some famous people and scientists who graduated from Dar al-Funun Tabriz are:
- Mirza Ismail Khan Mumtaz-ud-Doleh
- Mirza Ishaq Khan Mofehtam al-Dawlah
- Mirza Nasrullah Khan Saif al-Atba
- Dr. Jalil Khan Sabouri (Nasser al-Hukma)
- Mirza Jabarkhan Arfa Al-Hukma
- Haj Mirza Masoud Khan Adlul Mulk
- Haj Mirza Masoud Tabib
- Ismail Khan Najm al-Atba
- Iraj Mirza, a famous poet

Azerbaijan National University

The establishment of Azerbaijan National University in Tabriz was one of the approvals of the National Government Assembly (the puppet government of the Soviet government led by the communist profession and the leader of the separatist sect of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party) to provide for the colonial ambitions of the Soviet communist government. According to this decree, the National University should start working on the first of Mehr 1325. For this purpose, two solutions were predicted.
First, the building of Tabriz preparatory seminary, which was a well-equipped and suitable building, should be evacuated and handed over to the university. Therefore, a place was quickly prepared for the transfer of the preparatory school for boys, and the building was provided to the university and prepared for the admission of students in the next academic year.
Second, a suitable place for the university should be considered and the building and equipment of a modern university should be installed there.
Dr. Jahanshahlou (one of the influential leaders of the separatist sect of Azerbaijan) was elected as the president of the university and a 7-member commission was appointed to prepare the preparations for the opening of the university (in Mehr 1325) and to determine the courses and professors and to organize the affairs.
On 3/25/22, the foundation stone laying ceremony of the main building was first held in the preparatory seminary building, and then the guests went to the main site of the university and the construction work began by placing a memorial letter in the concrete foundation of the main pillar.
The amount of 2 million Tomans was allocated for the building and administrative costs of that budget, half of which was for the first stage of the building and the other half for equipment and other current costs. It should be said that the amount of two million tomans was more than the total annual budget of the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan.
Registration for the current academic year (October 1, 2025) began and was done from July 10 to August 15, 2015. Those who had the 6th high school diploma were accepted without the entrance exam, and the graduates of the 5th high school and preparatory schools were accepted after passing the entrance exam. The entrance exam was held in September and the classes were organized on time.
The university consisted of two faculties: 1) Faculty of Medicine, the duration of study is 6 years and the number of students accepted is 60. 2) The Faculty of Teacher Training includes 4 fields: language and literature, history and geography, physics and chemistry, mathematics and physics. It was supposed to establish agricultural and law faculties in the future.
The professors were selected from Tabriz doctors and professors and engineers. Only one professor of higher mathematics named Mohammadov was hired from Baku.
University classes were from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. In this way, the working professors and those students who were working could get to their work and studies.

Tabriz University

... Thirteen years ago in Dimah (1325), I visited the cities and villages of the vast region of Azerbaijan with the agreement of a delegation... The students of the university... sect were surprised and worried, they did not know what their fate would be. In this context, we gathered in the morning of Saturday, January 14, 1325, in the office of Tabriz Preparatory Academy (located at Azerbaijan University) and discussed the fate of the university. There were many reasons for and against the dissolution or continuation of this institution. I stated that... the negative discussion should be left aside and only discussed in this chapter, how to build the University of Tabriz as soon as possible, as easily and as completely as possible... and hope for the wandering of this group of innocent young people. .. (Students recruited in 1325) ended. Finally, a declaration was drawn up... the text of the declaration is more or less as follows: "On Saturday, the fourteenth of January 1325, a commission with the presence of Mr. Dr. Iqbal (Minister of Health) composed of Mr. Habibi, Dr. Kasmi, Dr. Bayani, Sadegh-Nejad ( Minister of Culture) and Dr. Rezazadeh Shafaq was held in Tabriz and the main issue was the need to continue Vahdat Nazar University.
In the message of Dr. Iqbal, the then Prime Minister, on the occasion of the 13th year of the establishment of Tabriz University, it is stated:
On September 2, 1326, according to the proposal number 6527 of the Ministry of Culture, a letter of approval was passed by the Council of Ministers, which, considering the urgent need of Tabriz University, the Minister of Culture will be authorized for two months from the date of this letter of approval, that for Tabriz University, the presidents and teachers In accordance with the provisions of this letter of approval, prepare the necessary legal plan for the establishment of that university and submit it to the National Consultative Assembly for approval.
During this period, the culture-loving people of Azerbaijan drew the government's attention to the importance and necessity of (re)establishing the University of Tabriz, using all available means and facilities.
Unfortunately, at the same time, there were changes in the government and as a result, the approval letter was interrupted.
Following the favorable opinion of the delegation as well as the assistance of the representatives of Azerbaijan province in the National Assembly, the Ministry of Culture decided to prepare a letter of approval for the establishment of Tabriz University and present it to the National Assembly.
After the developments in December 1325 and the destruction of the seditious and separatist leaders of the disbanded democratic sect of Azerbaijan and the withdrawal of the affairs of the Azeri provinces from the hands of the Soviet government and their internal mercenaries and the closure of Azerbaijan University in December 1325 A group consisting of Dr. Iqbal, Dr. Habibi (Professor of Tehran University Medical School), Dr. Khanbababiani (Professor of Tehran University Literature Faculty) and Dr. Shafaq were sent from Tehran to Tabriz to study and announce their final opinion regarding the establishment (reopening) of Tabriz University. .
