Successful implantation of subcutaneous implantable cardiac defibrillator and wireless intracardiac defibrillator (S-ICD) in Shahid Madani Heart Training and Treatment Center of Tabriz
Cardiologist and Electrophysiology Fellowship of Shahid Madani Heart Training and Treatment Center in Tabriz said: For the first time in the northwest of the country, a subcutaneous implantable cardiac defibrillator (S-ICD) was successfully implanted in a patient with heart failure at Shahid Madani Heart Center in Tabriz. According to the public relations report of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ruholah Hemti announced this news and said: Implantable cardiac defibrillator, also known as ICD, is a small device that works with batteries and is used in patients with heart failure and Genetic heart diseases have an indication.
He said: By implanting the ICD in the chest, abnormal heartbeats (arrhythmias) are detected and stopped if necessary. Irregular heart beats are stopped with an implantable heart defibrillator and the normal rhythm of the heart is established through electric shocks.
Dr. Hemti continued: Heart implant defibrillators are used for those who have dangerously high heart rates and are involved in a condition similar to tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation.
The cardiologist and electrophysiology fellowship specialist stated that there are two basic types of this device: Common type: ICD This device is implanted in the person's chest and its wires will be connected to the heart. Implantation of conventional defibrillators requires a small surgery.
And the subcutaneous type: (S-ICD) this device is another option that is implanted under the skin next to the chest and armpit. It is then attached to an electrode that runs along the bones of the chest. The S-ICD is slightly larger than conventional defibrillators but does not attach to the heart.
Dr. Hemti added: Unlike the usual type, the subcutaneous type of ICD does not have the complications related to the intracardiac wire (infection, wire breakage, wire displacement, and vein blockage), and the patient will not have upper limb movement restrictions.
